What does this poem symbolize?

The writer is talking about seeing burning cities and marching armies in the fire burning in the fireplace, in the way one sees animal shapes in clouds. It could be that he has been reading or hearing about wars, but otherwise I don't think it has any particular symbolism. Stevenson is a pretty straight-forward writer, and I think he is just being poetical about a type of experience.
