Is it safe to meet someone from online at 16?

I've known this guy on the internet for like 5 years now, I have his facebook and have seen him on webcam and stuff, he's 18. I like him, but i'm a bit worried about meeting someone from online, after hearing things from online and stuff, he told me he's a thief, which unnerves me for some reason. Is this a really bad idea?
