Possession of a handcuff key?

I was leaving the mall when my friend made an illegal u-turn to tell our other friend to turn his lights on. we get pulled over the cops said they smelt marijuana even though this is his new car and has never been smoked in before. i know that this is every cops excuse to search a vehicle. now when the cops hared us they found a smith and wesson hand cuff key in his wallet. since he's only 17 they called his parents to come to the scene. if not they were gonna arrest him with possession of hand cuff key.
