Why are people so convinced that the Bible is the truth?

After all, it is so old at this point, and the Gospels have been written and collated by people. The concept that we should be good, not kill etc are no-brainers in my view. So the Ten Commandments seem quite unremarkable to me. But once we get into other dogmas, oh dear, that's when we get into a real mess. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Jesus. I am sure he was a nice guy. But I am sure he did not want to enslave anyone into not thinking for themselves, he was just pointing out a few good tips for being nice people, was he not? But the hellfire and brimstone bit. The bit people get themselves all in a tizzy over, well what's that all about? I don't think for a minute that Jesus or God would suddenly turn on us. Do you? So the question is, can we just accept that it is all about faith then. If you want to have faith the bible is divine that's fine, meanwhile other people want to get on with their own beliefs about the universe.
