The Chinese in the fifteenth century were superior ...?

The Chinese in the fifteenth century were superior ship builders, possessed advanced navigational technology and the Ming rulers were sympathetic to exploration and foreign trade contacts. There is even evidence that Chinese explorers discovered the New World in 1421. The question, then, is why didn’t the Chinese continue to become the ultimate foreign power? Instead, it was Europeans who advanced in this area.
